There were four Army Chaplains on board (a Rabbi, a Catholic priest and two Protestant ministers), all of whom gave up their own life jackets to others and, by doing so, went down with their ship saving the lives of their fellows. Deborah Leigh: Good News and Bad News...

"Sleep well, America... Your TSA is on the job!"

Well, we got Deborah Leigh to the airport, at least (LAX, United terminal). Thank you so much to everybody who chipped in to get Deborah home for the funeral.

Then the TSA stepped in.

Now understand, Deborah Leigh is about four and a half feet tall. She can walk maybe fifty feet unassisted because of knee injuries she sustained in the Army (second to last cycle of WAC's before they phased them out.) She's in an airport wheelchair being pushed by an airline attendant.

So TSA descends on this obvious security threat, pulls her aside for a search... and discovers, to the nation's horror, that she's carrying a nonregulation amount of toothpaste. This offense against All That Is Decent and True and Paid Too Much to Wear a Cheap Blue Blazer cannot stand. So they want her to wheel all the way back down to check in, secure the menacing hygiene product in an approved manner, check the bag in, and then get trundled back through the whole security process all over again. Apparently the task of securing the toothpaste and the luggage then and there is beyond the skills of our crack gate guardians, and besides, they don't keep the security zip ties up where the security searches are actually done.

How do I know this? I know this because I got a phone call from Deborah half an hour before her flight as she's sitting there literally surrounded by these dimwitted dogberries and cloth-headed catchpoles, loudly informing me that she's not giving up her toothpaste and loudly informing them that her boyfriend's a blogger and he's going to tell the world about this (Note: Hello, again, Janet Napolitano) while I tell her to just throw the toothpaste away. But Deborah's very particular about her toothpaste...

UPDATE: After a fun evening without a word after that, I learn this morning that Deborah is safe on the ground in Philadelphia. We did our job, gang. Philadelphia.... well, Philly's on its own.

In retrospect, I feel a little guilty now about joking, "She's Homeland Security's problem now," after I finished scheduling and booking her flights...

I'm keeping the bleg going for the time being. Deb's tickets are squared away coming and going, but I'd like to see if we can't put up a couple of bucks to help balance lost work days she really can't afford — also, in case any of you in the tiny minority that's ever been hassled by TSA wants to show a little solidarity...

Sweet Meteor of Death in Campaign Sex Scandal!

Noted limousine chaser and Democratic Activist Gloria Allred today announced she was taking on the case of a woman who claimed she was sexually victimized by popular write-in GOP candidate Sweet Meteor of Death during a campaign stop at an undisclosed location.

The complainant, whom Ms. Allred identified as a Ms. Tiberia Church, came forward after two previous complainants declined to come out publicly, although informed speculation has identified them as a Ms. W. Deering and a Ms. D. Arden, both former members of the space industry in the Los Angeles area.

Ms. Church, according to Allred, originally met with the Sweet Meteor of Death to discuss issues, of which she said, "I have several." But she described the meeting as "creepy and off-putting" saying, "He looked at me like he'd never seen a woman before."

Ms. Church alleges that the meeting was so traumatic, it left her unable to pursue her university studies in comparative crypto-anthropology and terpsichorean ecdysiasm. An unspecified amount of damages for loss of earning potential and emotional distress is being sought.

Sweet Meteor of Death refused to directly refute the allegations when asked, noting that "When I come down on someone who has screwed me over, I come down hard!" Ms. Allred stated that a temporary restraining order was being sought compelling Sweet Meteor of Death to remain outside the orbit of Mars pending initial court hearings.

Rumors that Sweet Meteor of Death is considering suspending his campaign and endorsing former House Speaker Newt Gingrich have yet to be verified.

Hostile Fire and Imminent Danger Pay

The rules for Hostile Fire and Imminent Danger Pay have changed. Service members will now receive imminent danger pay only for days they actually spend in hazardous areas. This change went in effect on February 1, 2012.

A member of a uniformed service may be entitled to Hostile Fire and Imminent Danger pay at the rate of $225 for any month in which he/she was entitled to basic pay and in which he/she was:
Subject to hostile fire or explosion of hostile mines;
On duty in an area in which he was in imminent danger of being exposed to hostile fire or explosion of hostile mines and in which, during the period he was on duty in that area, other members of the uniformed services were subject to hostile fire or explosion of hostile mines;
Killed, injured, or wounded by hostile fire, explosion of a hostile mine, or any other hostile action; or
On duty in a foreign area in which he was subject to the threat of physical harm or imminent danger on the basis of civil insurrection, civil war, terrorism, or wartime conditions.

Note: Reserve members are also eligible for Hostile Fire and Imminent Danger Pay.

So Sgt. Carlo Eugenio, one of the dozen Americans killed when a suicide bomber rammed the bus he was riding on October 29, 2011, in downtown Kabul...

Any of the troops killed in rear areas where their Afghan allies got a sudden rush of Koran to the head and turned on the people they were supposed to be guarding... not eligible.

How the hell, Mr. President, are you supposed to define where you are not at risk in the middle of a guerilla war? @mnrobot @ZillaStevenson @ricksantorum There's progressive and there's progressive. I have NO faith in Romney shrinking government effectively. Big Gov MA style is all he's ever known. Likewise no repeal of ORomneycare. In this he's a lot like Obama. He has no experience of alternatives and when presented with the options he's rejected them.

With Newt it's arrogance. Newt will look at Big Government and think I can make this work! Hey, it's me! So he's unlikely to cut government departments or subsidiary agencies, but instead to try and micromanage them, e.g, Let's take all the DOE solar money and put it into cold fusion research! In this he's a lot like Obama. He's an academic who's not as smart as he thinks he but thinks he can bluster and fake it. Remember this was a guy lobbying for permanent L5 orbital colonies at a time when we could barely get a Shuttle launched.

Santorum has always been a grunt. I don't think he's subject to the sense of institutional entitlement Romney was surrounded by or by what he rightly describes as Newt's grandiosity. When Newt was posing for the cameras, Santorum was on the House floor holding the votes together behind Gingrich and his flights of fancy. Where he has erred in the direction of "progressive" I honestly believe it's been either a matter of principle, as with Specter, or in the sense of this was the best he honestly thought we could get. Remember, it was Santorum who made the deal for welfare reform, while Newt was smoking cigars with Clinton.

So in terms of reversing progressivism's metatstasis in the body politic, I have higher hopes for Santorum than either of the front runners. Of course a lot more of the People That Matter think they can use Mitt or Newt more readily...

Let's face it, folks, there are three lessons we have to take from the Iowa caucus last night:

1. People who meet Rick Santorum like and trust him.
2. Mitt Romney outspent Rick 100:1 and it bought him a lousy eight votes. He is the Kim Kardashian of GOP politics.
3. ROBERT STACY McCAIN WAS RIGHT. Not the Sunday morning pundits on any network. Not the 'respectable' bloggers like Red State ("Take me , CNN! Oh, God, take me, take me now!"). Not the Daily Caller with their attempted January surprise revelation of Santorum's Paulie nephew ("The Daily Caller regrets that Mike Tyson was unavailable for comment."). Not all the editorial pages or political analysts. Robert. Stacy. McCain.

So it's about time that paid off for him. It's time to put an end to doing journalism out of a tip jar. It's time for a campaign to get him on retainer to Fox or Levin or Limbaugh or somebody, as the on-the-scenes, on-the-ground old-school shoeleather reporter Stacy McCain epitomizes.

Surely some program at Fox has the budget for plane tickets and a stipend for Robert Stacy McCain. They can afford Bob Beckel, for God's sake.

Stacy's not smooth and polished and TV plastic. He's brash and opinionated and homely as a hickory walking stick. But smooth and polished and plastic got it wrong, and hickory got it right.

Dear Stacy McCain,

As the primary season wends onward, I wish you the best of luck in your quest for the ambassadorship to Vanuatu in the sunny South Pacific, from whatever candidate you ultimately decide was the best-one-all along-no-really-this-time-it's-love...

But prior planning prevents piss poor performance, as someone forgot to tell Herman and Newt, so allow me to suggest that it's time you start planning ahead in terms of your embassy staff.

Now of course you'll have the dauntless USMC detachment tasked with the actual protection of the embassy, but you're going to need a larger protective staff than that, a Legation Constabulary, if you will, that can be tasked with more flexible missions concerning the interests of US citizens and corporate interests in Vanuatu.

To that end, I would like to offer my services in the formation and command of this organization. I have prior service with a military unit with a notable record in this field, the 1/71 INF NYARNG, formerly the 71st Volunteer Infantry, who made an immortal name for themselves in Cuba during the Spanish-American War and in particular the epic charge at San Juan Juan Hill:

This proud tradition can be put to good use in your service as you maintain American interests in Vanuatu, particularly as pertain to those business partners you are at present in discussion with, such as Dole and the United Fruit Company...

This experience and service will stand me and my subordinates in good stead both in

maintaining your safety and more sophisticated civil affairs contacts with the general populace...

Of course, we must not lose sight of the fact that Vanuatu is an island chain,

so you will need to maintainsubstantial nautical assets for that aspect of your ~~de facto rule~~ ambassadorship.

And I'm sure we both know just the man to manage them.

I'm sure I don't need to sing Smitty's praises to you...

but I don't think you're fully aware of his distinguished sea service in this particular field,

or the crack ships he's served upon:

The USS Kahtadin, the last torpedo ram built by any naval power,

twenty years in the construction, that's how good it was!

The USS Terror, a monitor of such puissance that it

reminded eyewitnesses of the Civil War just thirty years before!

And of course the USS Panay, a ship of such distinguished service

on the Yangtze that the Japanese insisted we leave it there as a memorial...

So don't worry, Stacy! Between us Smitty and I can make your Ambassadorial term both the diplomatic triumph and the life-enriching experience you always hoped it would be!

Gallant Dick Lugar, who has never met anyone who needed him he couldn't betray, from Filipina election workers threatened by Marcos' secret police to his own constituents, today claimed that Tea Party challengers cost the GOP their Senate Majority in 2010.

Never mind that they had already lost it in the elections of 2006 and 2009.

Lugar has made a career of thwarting efforts by the GOP on judges, gun control legislation, bank bailouts and appointments out of a McCainesque sense of self-importance and urge for media praise. If he seriously thinks the GOP would have done better with the likes of Castle and Crist, he's not only out of touch with the American people, he's out of touch with what's going on in Washington.

So let the battle rage! Let our self-appointed Odysseuses (Odysseyi?) scurry around thinking how clever and manipulative they're being, while our vainglorious Ajaxes sulk in their tents, their brilliance unappreciated, as our virtuous Hippolotuses (~~Hippoloti~~ - screw it, did that joke already) have their honor and naiveté exploited and our wretched Philocteteseses suffer tormented exile for impiety towards the Gods of the Web.

The end result will be magnificent, a modern Iliad for our times... as directed by Roger Corman.

Why I'm not supporting Rick Perry (yet)...

When they wanted to show Ronald Reagan as a working man, a man of the people, they went and got pictures of the man working, the way he always worked...

When they wanted to show us George W. Bush as a working man, a man of the people, they went and shot pictures of him working, the way he always worked....

When they wanted to show us Rick Perry as a working man, a man of the people, they fired up the backlights and the smoke machine and the movie set and the props and the pristine chaps that frankly looked to me like they'd never spent a day in the chaparral...

Look, maybe Rick Perry is a rough tough working buckaroo. I certainly respect his military service. But back when he was running against Perry for the Governorship, Kinky Friedman laid a serious rap on Perry as an empty suit, a tailor's dummy for the Machine to manipulate.

Handing us a glorified Marlboro Man ad is no way to lay that concern to rest. And to a lesser extent that's a problem with the rest of his ads, as well. His denim shirts are always crisp and brand-new, his "work" jackets uncreased and unscarred. Working folks get dirty, they get wrinkled, and they won't hold against a man who shows up to talk about jobs in a jacket that looks like it's been worked in.

Now I know Kinky has at least come around to the extent of acknowledging that Perry has presided over some outstanding economic performance by the state of Texas. But presiding over other people's hard work by itself is not a sign that you can do the work yourself.

And yes, Perry had some brain freezes in those jumped-up reality shows we called debates. But the thing is, it seems to me, a man with deeply held convictions and intentions could expand on those even if he blocked on a certain specific buzzword or platform point. Perry needs to show me he can do that yet.

Understand, I could bring myself to vote for Perry regardless, where I don't think I could for Romney or Gingrich. But I'd be a lot happier if he showed me there was some 'there' there.

Newt Gingrich, Rick Perry and a Cast of Thousands...

Presidential hopefuls tend to take credit for the efforts of their coworkers... When Newt Gingrich assumed the Speakership of the House, he was entering an environment where Congressional Republicans, including Rick Santorum and John Boehner (yeah, once upon a time) had already exposed the Democratic Culture of Corruption with their prosecution of the House Bank and Post Office scandals. Their actions laid the groundwork for the expulsion of Democrat Speaker Jim Wright and the ascension of Newt Gingrich and his Contract with America. Not to hear him tell it, of course, but...

Rick Perry boasts of the million jobs created during his tenure as Governor. But the governorship of Texas is actually an office of fairly limited power, as critics of GW Bush liked to remind us. The actual work of legislating in Texas is in the hands of the Legislature and Lt. Governor. Perry can rightly take credit for providing leadership and a conscience to the government of Texas, but the state's financial strength has many fathers outside the Governor's mansion.

The point is not that either man is too fond of grabbing undeserved credit. The point is that we the voters should not be looking for a man on a white horse (or big shiny moon rocket in Newt's case, maybe) to save us single-handedly. No president we elect can success unless we the voter provide them with a legislative body that will cooperate in the execution of the public's will, as opposed to killing our hopes. Without that, the greatest leader can rear his white horse and wave his sword all he wants on the path to futility, With that, even a flawed president can create a legacy that will endure.

It's not on them. It's on us.
